 Web Site Redesign
There's been enough people who have complained about my Descent site, yet wouldn't lend a hand with it.
If there's someone who wants to make a complete redesign of my web site, then he's cordially welcome. The final product must be real good though.
I don't have the time.

Unfortunately, while I have the ability to put websites together, my resources for actually designing and themeing them are pretty limited.

Hmm, this website uses PHP and I still have my PHP editing tools with me. Plus I find Visual Studio 2008 to be pretty good with XML and HTML, I could possibly manage the coding side of things and site layout.
Mind you, I need to finish the project I am already doing before I start another.
I think what this site needs is just a better way to navigate to the important things like the installation guide. Some people seem to have trouble getting their head around that Sidemenu. Just a few changes to code will fix that.
Also the site uses frames to display links to donations, the forum and Sourceforge. Many people hate frames so we could also come up with a way to eliminate them.
The only thing I cant do is art & design.

Well, the code should use layers instead of frames. There's also a lot of Java script creating HTML using some text in a data array which should probably be replaced.

Frustikus has provided some good input.
First of all both he and I think the website isn't that bad.
The main problems people have are the menus and finding all downloads.
So I will do two things:
- Replace the side scrolling menus with menus that are always visible
- Restructure the downloads area (put all downloads there - currently D2X-XL has its own downloads page, and make it clearer)
May take a while though, I am currently having my head deep in stream computing stuff and don't want to switch my attention.

I don't see what the big hype is. I can navigate descent2.de just fine.

I think most of us can find our way around, but to people who are new to the website, it might be a little confusing at first.

Idea:
The lay out can be done using DIVs and CSS
Navigation can be redone abit...to look more "Stylish" and easier to use for "newbs"

Incidentally, it already uses both (albeit div elements only for the pop-up menu which is, curiously, generated entirely in JavaScript).
The pop-up menu probably isn't an ideal solution unless there is a very pressing need for more space, though. It makes the site different, but that has both positive and negative effects.

Yeah. He owns the site after all, so he gets the choice of what goes on it. Google probably pays more than the lower 50% of his donation contributors combined anyway.

I get money if people click on them, but I have gotten less than 100 USD since they're up, so I guess most people block them or ignore them. If they wasted only a single thought on why they're there, they'd click them like there'd be no tomorrow. Well, most D2X-XL apparently won't even spend an extra mouse click for the game, so much less money.
