A Word To The Descent Community

Today I have been informed by Topher from the descentbb.net that my modship of the D2X-XL area in the Descentbb.net has been withdrawn. This was the place I have been frequenting most for all D2X-XL related discussions.

Read more here.

The background is that I had caused quite some unrest in the descentbb.net by posting stuff that made people feel offended, and opinions people there simply didn't like, particularly in the E&C and NHB forum areas of the descentbb.net. This had happened about 1 or 1 1/2 years ago. Some people also were upset that I added stuff to D2X-XL they didn't like (mouselook in particular), and it didn't help that I made such stuff optional and server controlled.

Some of these people haven't been able to get over it to this day, harrassing, flaming and insulting me there and everywhere else they could in the Descent community ever since. It was kind of enlightening about the zeal they had developed in their crusade against me when I got insulted by people I had never met before right when I appeared in KALI chat (the main gathering place of the Descent 1 and 2 multiplayer community) to fix the bugs D2X-XL was reported to be having in KALI (IPX) games.

Some forum nicks that that come to my mind are Ferno, MD-2389 and Krom, but there are others. There are people who on some occasions have attacked me out of the blue w/o me having a clue why they did it. People who like to dish out but hate being dished out to. Apparently it was by any means impossible for me to appease these people, as they simply didn't want to let their cases rest.

It is sad that the descentbb.net is controlled by people with characters as lackluster as this; by people who are not representative for the Descent community, and who are not doing the Descent community a service, but are satisfying their egos, their lust for vengeance and destruction. Maybe I have hit a nerve a few times too often, but it's the truth that hurts most after all. I also believe that envy plays a big role here, the envy of people who see someone doing something creative, something that is good and useful, something they could never achieve themselves.

Funny enough I had talked about this with Koolbear, the forum owner, just a couple of weeks ago, telling him that I was about to leave. I don't need that place. If at all it needs me. It is me who has done something for the Descent community, not the other way round.

To be honest: It isn't that important for me. I could not say I don't care at all, but I don't care all that much.

My new single player mission 'Boiling Point' is the last big thing I have done for Descent. I had the text stating exactly this sitting on my HD for quite a while already.

So I am pretty much out of there, and Descent in general. I will continue to fix bugs - at least the bad ones - for a while, but that's it. It is about time to move on. This project has eaten a lot of my leisure time during the past years. Too much actually.

Bye bye

An update: Meanwhile, I have been banned from the Descentbb.net, for no good reason. It couldn't have gotten any clearer that the mob currently governing that place has but the intention to offend me in any possible way. I cannot reach Koolbear, the forum owner. It looks like for some reason he is unavailable for a longer period of time (probably sickness), and the gutless invertebrates now in charge took their chances to finally take me on. People like that are not worthy of any of my efforts, and should not be part of any good internet community. It is due to my efforts that people can still play this great game on modern hardware, and not only on Windows PCs but on Linux and even Mac OS X. Ask yourselves what these people have done for the Descent community during the past two years.
