Launch the D2X-XL Windows installer (d2x-xl-w32-<version>.exe) which actually is a self extracting rar archive. Enter the folder of your Descent installation and start the D2X-XL installation process. The installer will extract all required program and data files to the folder you have specified.

The default installation already provides default program settings (config\d2x-default.ini) and default player files (profiles\default.plr and profiles\default.plx) containing reasonable values. You copy d2x-default.ini to d2x.ini and change d2x.ini to your preferences. D2X-XL will ignore d2xdefault.ini when it finds d2x.ini in the config Folder.

If you are installing D2X-XL for the first time, edit your d2x.ini file and change the line '-check_setup 0' to '-check_setup 1'. After you have done that, launch D2X-XL to have it setup the environment it needs. In case of errors, D2X-XL will report all files it couldn't find. After it is done, you want to change that line back to the initial value.

Error messages like 'The application failed to initialize properly', are a hint that D2X-XL is missing some system libraries. In that case you can try to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (32 bits (x86), 64 bits (x64)).
