THE STORY SO FAR
----------------

It was a time long before First Strike ever happened.
Late one night, a group of Post-Terran Mining Corporation
executives sat around a meeting table at their headquarters in
Shiva Station. They had come together to discuss a plan guaranteed
to boost production and efficiency. The plan was to create a
breed of hyper-intelligent mining robots to handle the mundane
tasks normally performed by humans. This "Mine Automation Plan"
would put PTMC at the top of the universal mining industry for
sure, but it didn't come without concern.
"The mine automation plan is a taxing endeavor that will
ultimately end in failure." Those were the words uttered by
Dr. Malcolm Doppler Phobos, one of the leading PTMC scientists.
"Something is bound to go wrong, robot technology isn't as perfect
as it seems. Giving robots the ability to slash through solid
rock, imagine the chaos that would ensue if something went
wrong. A failure, gentlemen -- complete failure."
One member of the Board of Directors stood up. "Doctor,
we can understand your concerns. But you simply aren't speaking
from our standpoint. We must have progress. We must proceed
with this plan for the good of the company. Which is why I'm
putting you in charge of it."
        "Why me?" Phobos asked.
"You're the master of robotics around here. Now, I
understand that you've been designing a few of the robots over
at your lab at Pluto Outpost. Gather those plans and bring them
here, that's an order. Meeting is adjourned, gentlemen."
Phobos stormed out of the meeting room and headed for
Pluto Outpost. Shortly following his return, Dravis arrived
at Pluto Outpost.
"What the heck is it?" asked Phobos.
        "Well..."
"Make it quick, Dravis. I'm busy here."
"Okay, you asked for it. I've been ordered by my superior,
Suzuki, to tell you that you're out of a job. You're fired. Your
work has been far less than exemplary this fiscal year, and your
reluctance towards the Mine Automation Plan is something we are not
fond of."
"Oh, I see." Phobos replied in a mocking manner. "So,
since I'm not a sycophant like you, I'm fired. Don't worry,
I understand."
Phobos packed his briefcase and ran towards the Outpost's
main loading bay.
"Wait!" Dravis exclaimed. "Come back, Doctor!"
But it was too late. Dravis shielded his eyes as he was
blinded by the headlights of his own Pyro-GX. Phobos had made
off with the Pyro, and left Pluto.
Dravis quickly dispatched two guards to hunt down Phobos.
But the weaponry on Phobos' new Pyro-GX made the pursuers slag in
a matter of minutes.
PTMC Intelligence managed to trace Dr. Phobos in the
stolen Pyro for a short time. Then, he suddenly vanished.
Judging from his flight course directly into an asteroid field,
Intelligence believed that Dr. Phobos was dead, possibly slamming
into an asteroid.

The next two years brought enormous wealth to the PTMC.
The Mine Automation Plan was in full swing, despite problems
that were quickly dispatched, including First Strike and
Counterstrike. Things seemed to be better than ever, with
Phobos out of the way, slamming into an asteroid.

        Or did he...?
