Dark Matter
|
Dark Matter by Darkhorse is a rather simple level, but very skillfully built and very impressive looking, so I added it. Although Darkhorse stated that it's a rather old level of his, this version is from 2004 and has some minor alterations to it he claims he hasn't made. But so be it. It's really worth being seen.

difFusion was built by Darkhorse as a multiplayer level with a strong emphasis on tunnel ratting. While I don't believe that it lends itself all too well to multiplayer games due to its size and complexity, it holds its own in terms of structure and texturing. I have yet to see a level where the lava/rock/concrete theme is executed as superbly as in difFusion. It's a fantastic blend of narrow tunnels, cramped rooms, large halls, decorated with pillars, rocks or concrete blocks sticking out of the walls, and signs of human existance in the form of grates or supports here and there. The texturing uses mainly brownish and reddish rock, with some lava ponds around. The level is completely irregular not only in its general layout, but also in its many naturally shaped areas. I never had the feeling of moving my ship in an actual half-natural, half-man made mine as real as in difFusion. My only minor point of criticism is the use of a moving rock texture where lava would have fit the theme and environment better. The screenshots can give an impression, but do not really do justice to difFusion - download and see for yourself.

Noble Gases
Noble Gases is a six level multiplayer set built by Darkhorse in late 2000. Every but the last level has been designed on graph paper, and both his skill in constructing, texturing and lighting a level and his expertise in creating good multiplayer levels simply shine here. The levels' sizes are perfect, and apart from the last level, each level has a well balanced number of ideally sized halls and hallways to connect them. Some levels are complemented with a network of tunnels below them. Note: The levels are not sorted according to their related elements' order in the PSE.

#1 Krypton
Darkhorse calls this his best multiplayer level bar none, and indeed it seems to be close to perfect. The doors could give you some trouble if you're in a hurry, but not that much. Very irregularly shaped level with interconnected caves and lots of short tunnels.

#2 Argon
Argon comes completely green and has the simplest structure of all levels: It's very open and its wide halls are all directly connected, with some tunnels below for a surprise attack or quick escape.

#3 Xenon
Xenon appears coooooold. The whole level is an expertly designed shining ice cave, with ledges and corners in between that might make it a tad hard to maneuver at times - no big problem though. Again the proven recipee of interconnected halls that offer space for dogfighting is executed perfectly here. Darkhorse is even so extravagant to add a complete inaccessible river flowing through an ice chasm to the level just for looks (if only the spewn powerups don't end up here ...). Stunning.

#4 Helium
Helium features a rock/concrete themed site, with fans adding a techy, man-made look. If I had to chose a level I like most, I'd chose this one. It looks extremely realistic to me. Halls, tunnels, hallways - the proven mixture at work here again.

#5 Neon
Neon jumps at you with its colors, and it looks like Darkhorse let the bright ads associated with this gas inspire him here. Yet the level doesn't look ugly, and the coloring scheme has been chosen very well. Should be a fast paced level, as it is very open and has few corners to hide.

#6 Radon
Radon is the level set's only level Darkhorse has built directly with DMB2 and DBB2. It simply consists of three concentric rings with a core in their middle. It still looks good, but I think it's not quite up-to-par with the sets other levels, as it's a little on the large side and has few alternative routes to offer.

Epona II is a very diligently and skillfully crafted multiplayer level with a very irregular layout and structure. While this already lets it standout from the crowd, the completely monochromatic texturing makes it something truly special. Now this is not simply black and white texturing, but you will find all shades of gray from the Descent palette in this level. Even the force field sparks are silver. With this level, Darkhorse again qualifies himself as a top notch Descent level designer.

Magnacore
|
I almost missed this one - it can be a bad idea to judge a level from the level editor only. Magnacore is a giant volcanic cave system with numerous caverns, rock clafts, huge domes, incredibly irregularly shaped, with boulders on the ground, sharp spikes hanging from the ceiling, not a single even spot on the floor. It is hard to believe that this has been built using the D2 engine. This is the volcanic level bar none, and Darkhorse puts himself on a level with Kruel with it!
